Award Categories & Criteria

*Please note that all Nominees are required to be in attendance at the Gala Awards Dinner in order to be eligible for an award.*

 

1.              FinTech Startup of the Year

For a new, up-and-coming FinTech company in Canada that is less than three years old and has shown the most entrepreneurial success in the past year in FinTech.  Success is measured on a number of factors, including innovative technology, solving a technology need, capturing a new sector or market with FinTech, disruption of a service or market segment, application of product or service and traction in, or ability to obtain traction in the international marketplace.

·      Startup must be 3 or less years old

·      Canadian entity

·      Recognizes innovation (e.g., solves a technology need of disrupts an existing service)

·      In financial services

 

2.              Established FinTech of the Year

For an established FinTech company in Canada that has been providing finance products or services for over three years and is actively engaged in innovation creation.  Success is measured on a number of factors, including partnership with banks or providing services directly to consumers and growth adoption.

·      Company over 3 years old

·      Canadian entity

·      In financial services

·      Recognizes innovation

 

3.              Law or Professional Firm of the Year

For a law firm, advisory or accounting firm in Canada, that has been the most impactful in the FinTech space.  This Award ideally is for the firm that has been in the FinTech or startup space for a number of years and in the course of its services as a services firm, has been instrumental and impactful in helping to launch or grow FinTech companies either through legal advice, advisory services or services that were engaged for FinTech financings. 

·      Canadian law, accounting or advisory firm

·      Provides services to FinTechs

·      Recognizes impact in FinTech (e.g., by financings)

 

4.              Financial Institution of the Year

For the Canadian financial institution, bank or credit union or other financial institution that has had a positive impact in FinTech in Canada either by breaking down silos to support innovation internally, by creating innovating and novel FinTech for the financial institution, or by entering into partnerships that support or allow for the development of FinTech at the institutional level.  This Award is not designed for financial institutions that adopt or deploy FinTech created and branded by third parties but rather is designed to recognize internal innovative initiatives that engage employees and support innovation designed in Canada by Canadians.

·      Must be Canadian

·      Bank, credit union, financial institution

·      Recognizes FinTech created internally

 

5.              FinTech Leader of the Year

For a Canadian who has demonstrated the most leadership in FinTech and is targeted at recognizing a person who has had shaped the FinTech dialogue and supported the FinTech community in Canada.  Leadership is measured on a number of factors, including thought leadership, supporting Canada and inclusivity meaning a person who supports innovation of all Canadians from coast to coast to coast.

·      Must be Canadian

·      Recognizes thought leadership

·      Must have been in FinTech for over 3 years

·      Must be a notable person

·      Not intended for advisory firms

 

6.              Blockchain/Digital Currency or Distributed Ledger Tech Startup of the Year

For a Blockchain or Distributed Ledger Technology startup based in Canada that has developed the most novel, practical or needed technology for digital currencies, Blockchain or distributed ledger tech.  Success could include consumer traction, tech prowess, novel or globally impactful solutions.  This award is for Canadian startups where the technology was developed by Canadians.

·      Canadian entity

·      Less than 5 years old

·      Recognizes innovation in this space

·      Technology must be in use

 

7.              RegTech Company of the Year

For a new Canadian RegTech company based in Canada that has demonstrated the most thought leadership and developed the most impactful technology for regulation in financial services.  This award seeks to recognize Canadian companies that create leading solutions in the regulatory space that deserves recognition for technology.

·      Canadian entity

·      Technology must be in use

·      Intended to recognize novel innovation solution

 

8.              Accelerator/Incubator of the Year

For the accelerator or incubator that has demonstrated success in helping FinTech or AI startups to launch their businesses, or develop technology and work with others in the sector to develop innovative products or services that have an impact.  This award is to recognize the importance of incubators and accelerators in fostering ecosystem support or other forms of support in Canada that advance innovation in Canada, or for all Canadians.

·      Canadian entity

·      In FinTech or AI space

·      Recognizes accelerators or incubators that support ecosystem

 

9.              Investment Firm of the Year

For the investment firm whose financial support created the most innovative technologies or developed the FinTech space the most in Canada.  This Award is targeted at recognizing the investment firm that has shown the most initiative in supporting FinTech companies with the capital that they needed to grow their businesses.  The investment firm will not necessarily have invested the most capital, in dollar terms in the FinTech sector.

·      Canadian entity

·      Recognizes investment in FinTech that has had a material impact

 

10.           AI Company of the Year

For the Canadian company in AI that has shown the most entrepreneurial success in the past year in AI.  Success is measured on a number of factors, including innovation, solving a technology problem, disruption of a service or market segment, application of product or service and traction in, or ability to obtain traction in the international marketplace in AI.

·      Canadian entity

·      Recognizes innovation

·      Open to AI companies in any sector

 

11.           AI in Finance Award

For the AI company that has created AI technology specifically for the financial services sector and shown the most thought leadership over the past year based on growth, innovation or the most powerful applications of AI and machine learning to transform financial services.  This Award recognizes technology and is not intended to recognize the most well-known AI startup in finance.  It could include financial institutions creating internal AI innovation on their own, without third parties.

·      Canadian entity

·      Recognizes AI specifically in financial services

 

12.           AI Leader of the Year

For a Canadian who has demonstrated the most leadership in AI.  This Award is targeted at recognizing the person who has had the most impact in shaping the AI dialogue and supporting the AI community.  Leadership is measured on thought leadership, the advancement of commercial AI, or investment in AI and recognizes inclusivity, meaning a person who supports all of Canada.

·      Must be Canadian

·      Recognizes a notable person in AI

·      Must have been in AI for over 3 years to be eligible for this award

 

13.              Cybersecurity Award for Financial Services

For a company in Canada that creates cybersecurity solutions for financial services to protect institutions and customers from cyberattacks including ransomware attacks.  The nominee can be a large organization or a startup; the key is that the entity has developed technology solutions that are in deployment to protect the financial system.

·      Canadian entity

·      Any size entity

·      Recognizes cybersecurity expertise

·      Technology must be in use

 

14.           Judge’s Choice Award

For a key player in the FinTech industry who has demonstrated thought leadership and ecosystem engagement, as decided upon by the Digital Finance Institute.
